The ELA standards are extremely applicable to me as I plan to become an English teacher. The Reading Standards for grades 9-12 make me feel confident in my abilities as a teacher, because all of these standards are things that I have perfected through my time as an English Literature major in college. I also think that the writing standards for this age group will be a strength within my teaching ability. I don't really think any of the standards within the English discipline would require more learning on my part, but if I were to have to teach a science course, those standards would be difficult for me to teach my students.
I think the CPALMS ToolKit is a great idea for teachers. However, when searching through it for lesson plans, project ideas, educational games, etc., there was not much there for English teachers. Most of the results were just standards. These are still useful for teachers to help make lesson plans and activities. I also really liked the interactive videos on CPALMS.
The newsletter design assignment I learned how to shade the background of text boxes and add a shaded banner at the top of a page when the rest of the page is two-column. I also learned how to more easily navigate using a two-column page. I didn't really like using Word for this assignment, as it is really difficult to use for these kinds of assignments and because there are so many better options out there for graphic design. Next time, I'd probably include one more article that was specifically for the parents, not both the parents and the students, as newsletters are read mostly by parents. This assignment will help me in making newsletters for my classrooms in the future!
